Every weekend during the month of February: In spirit of the "Soles to Souls" campaign, the Key Biscayne girl scouts will be collecting donated shoes.
Are your husband's ancient workout shoes giving your bedroom a bad odor? Is your child's big toe starting to stick through his/her sneaker? And what about those flip flops from Target? Are they losing their color and bounce? If the answer to any of these questions is "yes" then it's time to buy new shoes and DONATE THE OLD ONES.
This year's collection will focus on Haiti and Guatemala and go to the children of sugar cane workers, displacement camps, and more. There also is an effort to collect running shoes for girls and boys in Ethiopia, who aspire to break the cycle of poverty by becoming runners but have to train in their bare feet.
The girl scouts will be selling cookies and accepting donated shoes at Winn Dixie every weekend in February. If you are unable to make it to Winn Dixie, then Jill Stephens and Anne Rothe are offering their homes as "dumping grounds." Jill lives at 159 East Enid and Anne lives at 275 Glenridge Road. You are welcome to simply leave your donated shoes at our doorsteps (in a plastic bag, please).
I hope each of you can help make a difference for families in Haiti, Guatemala and perhaps Ethiopia. So many of the people who care for our children and help in our homes and community come from these countries. Let's help make a difference, albeit it small, in the lives of these individuals.
