Wednesday, April 15, 2009 5:30 pm Reception, 6 pm Lecture - Invasion of the Lion Fish: Lad Akins, Director of Special Projects Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) There is a new predator prowling the coral reefs in the Atlantic Ocean.  It has a voracious appetite, toxic spines, and belongs in the Pacific.  It is the invasive lionfish, and from the Bahamas to Bermuda, along the U.S. East Coast and in the northern Caribbean it has been spotted. Lad Akins has been working hard to monitor and remove lionfish from Atlantic reefs.  He will explain the issue and what we can all do to help. It will be an enlightening talk and one that reveals how even the innocent dumping of an aquarium can put our precious ocean resources at risk.

Friday, April 17, 2009 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm Opening Reception for Hans Feyerabend's Lost and Found Art Exhibit. Join us at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center for the Opening Reception of Hans Feyerabend's Lost and Found art exhibit located at The Gallery in the Biscayne Nature Center. The title of the exhibit "Lost and Found" refers to the ever changing character of our natural surroundings: a sea creature's life becomes lost and found as a "treasure" on the beach, admired for its unique color and shape. The sculptures "Seepferd" (Sea Horse) and "Octopus" are made from palm and tree branches found in and around Miami. They lost their purpose for the plant, which shed them off, to become part of a new entity, a work of art. Live music and refreshments will be offered. The cost of this beach-side art gallery opening is FREE and Child-Friendly! There is a $5 parking fee to enter Crandon Park. Please use the North Beach entrance of Crandon Park to access the Biscayne Nature Center.

Monday, April 20, 2009 7:00 pm Key Biscayne Historical Society Lecture - The Key Biscayne Historical & Heritage Society and the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science have teamed up to present "Flashback: Today's Economy vs. the Great Depression." Economist and Key Biscayne resident, Dr. David Letson will share his perspectives on today's economic situation, and compare it to previous downturns in the United States. Letson will then address how today's rising unemployment rate and falling incomes change the ways in which we use and protect natural resources. 'Protection' from, say, hurricanes or a changing climate will require us to forgo or at least defer a payday. What's at stake? Minerals, land, water, forests, soils, fish, climate, corals and toxins, to name just a few… Seating is limited, so residents are asked to RSVP to:
